Linda Chang receives ASB Non-Professorial Research Award for her outstanding achievement during 2008
Linda Chang was nominated by the School of Accounting based on her publication, with Dr Mandy Cheng and Prof Ken Trotman, in the journal Accounting, Organizations and Society. This is an outstanding achievement for an academic in accounting at the Lecturer level. This journal is one of only six accounting journals ranked as A* by the Australian Business Deans Council, and as such is clearly regarded as one of the leading accounting journals in the world. It is only very occasionally that lecturers completing their PhD are able to publish in a top quality journal.
Roger Simnett Receives the Australian School of Business Outstanding Research Supervision Award
Nominations for the awards were considered by a panel of nine people including a previous winner, a student representative, L&T specialists, an Associate Dean (Education) in an external Faculty, the ASB Associate Dean (Education) and the ASB Dean.

Dr Balatbat, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting, has organized the Symposium on Global Carbon Finance and Market to be held in Singapore on 24-26 June 2009 in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University.
Christina Boedker named winner of an Outstanding Paper Award at the 2009 Literati Network Awards for Excellence
Christina's paper, "Enhanced business reporting: International trends and possible policy directions", was published in the Journal of Human Resource Costing & Accounting.
Professor Philip Brown, along with Dr Wendy Beekes from Lancaster University, has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme grant for the next two years
Professor Brown, who has concurrent appointments in the Schools of Accounting, and Banking and Finance at UNSW and at UWA, is also an honorary visiting professor at Lancaster University. The Leverholme grant is a graphic recognition of Professor Brown’s research on corporate governance with Dr Beekes, which they began in 2002.

Dr Christina Boedker awarded DIISR Grant
Dr Christina Boedker from the School of Accounting, UNSW, and her colleagues Prof Roy Green, Prof John Mathews, Dr Renu Agarwal, A.Prof John Buchanan, Prof Danny Samson, Prof John Van Reenen, Prof Nick Bloom, A/Prof Paul Gollar, Dr Phil Toner, have been awarded a $460,035 grant from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research for their research Impact of Managerial Practices on Firm Performance.
Improving the Credibility of Carbon Emissions Disclosures: The Development of an International Assurance Standard
Professor Roger Simnett delivered the CPA Australia 69th Annual Research Lecture on 13th October at Melbourne University. His lecture examined the issues and progress on establishing an international assurance standard or guidance to enhance reliability and disclosure quality of carbon emissions reporting.

Dr Maria Balatbat awarded funding from 2008 Contestable Funding Scheme
Dr Maria Balatbat, Senior Lecturer at the School of Accounting, and Prof David Carmichael from the Faculty of Engineering have been awarded funding of $30,000 from the 2008 Contestable Funding Scheme for their project entitled Role of carbon financing in developing nations in mitigating GHG emissions.

Professor Roger Simnett, Head of School of Accounting, Australian School of Business, has been appointed co-chair of IAASB’s International Task Force Setting Assurance Standard on Global Carbon Emissions.
Scientia Professor Ken Trotman has received the “2008 Notable Contribution To The Auditing Literature Award”
from the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association. The prize winning paper is The Audit Review Process: A Characterization from the Persuasion Perspective¸ J. Rich, I. Solomon and K. Trotman, Accounting, Organisations & Society, (Vol.22, No.5, 1997), pp.481-505. The award recognizes a published work of exceptional merit that has made, or has the potential to make, a direct contribution to auditing or assurance research, education, and practice.
2008 John V Ratcliffe Memorial Lecture
The 2008 John V Ratcliffe Memorial Lecture was held in March 2008 at the 6th Floor Business Lounge, Australian School of Business, University of New South Wales.
Professor Ira Solomon's lecture Public-Company Auditing Post SOX: A Focus on Financial Statement Fraud covered the changes in the business environment at the start of the 21st century, the antecedents to these changes, and then considered the new, greater expectations of the public and regulators with respect to public company auditors. There was significant focus on the characteristics of financial statement fraud, and the new ways of thinking about old auditing concepts such as audit risk and audit evidence.
A fine way to start the School of Accounting year – School of Accounting winner AAA Auditing Section Outstanding Dissertation Award
Congratulations to Dr Elizabeth Carson, winner of the American Accounting Association Auditing Section Outstanding Dissertation Award for 2008. Dr Carson is the first person outside the USA to receive this very prestigious award, which recognizes the dissertation judged to make the most outstanding contribution to auditing knowledge.
Professor Cyril Brookes passed away on 13 December
During his 20 years tenure at UNSW Professor Brookes was Head of the School of Accountancy from 1979 to 1985, and later on the School of Information Systems and Technology. Colleagues, friends and numerous students will remember Cyril as a dedicated and inspiring teacher and researcher with a passion for IT innovations for business and government.
AFAANZ Award to Assoc Professor Richard Morris
The Award for Best Paper, International Stream at AFAANZ 2007 Conference has been presented to Assoc Professor Richard Morris from School of Accounting and Professor Sid Gray of Sydney University. The title of their paper is Corporate Transparency Differences in the Asian Region: The Feasibility of Global Standardization in Practice? Research was funded by an ARC Discovery Grant.
2007/2008 AFAANZ Research Grant Applications
Dr Jeff Coulton and Ms Caitlin Ruddock of the Department of Accounting are recipients of the 2007/2008 AFAANZ Research Grant scheme for their project entitled The Relation Between Nonaudit Services and Financial Reporting Quality at the Partner Level.
UNSW Accounting Researchers Ranked No.1 in the World
The outstanding quality of our accounting research has been recognised internationally by the journal Accounting and Finance, which ranked UNSW‘s accounting research first in the world for the period 1998-2005. The Accounting and Finance research considers publications in the top 24 international accounting journals.
Gordon Howitt awarded Honorary Fellow of the University
In recognition of his eminent service to Accounting and the University, on 1st June Gordon Howitt BEc Syd., MCom UNSW, AASA, ACIS, was presented to the Chancellor, Mr David Gonski AO, by Professor Chris Adam.
Accounting welcomes its newest Doctor
Helen Kang received her Doctorate at the Graduation Ceremony of 8th May. Her thesis, Reporting intangible assets: voluntary disclosure practices of the top emerging market companies, was supervised by Professor Syd Gray and Associate Professor Richard Morris. Helen joined the School in 1999 and currently teaches first year accounting subjects and undergraduate financial accounting.
Ken Trotman awarded top international editorship
Professor Ken Trotman has been selected as the incoming editor for Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, effective 1 July 2008. AJPT is published by the American Accounting Association and is acknowledged as clearly the premier auditing journal in the world. It is one of only a handful of accounting journals contained on the Social Sciences Citation Index.
